Surviving Christmas Shopping with the iPhone

November 23, 2009

I love Christmastime.  I enjoy picking out presents for my friends and family.  I love the hustle and bustle, the bows and packages.  I even tolerate the music.

I figured even my iPhone can get into the Spirit and help me out with my shopping this year.  So I did a little research and came up with the best iPhone apps to help me with my holiday shopping which I now share with you. ( Be sure to see #6. It has major wow factor!)

#1. TGI Black Friday App- This app has all the Black Friday deals loaded.  You can view all of them on your iPhone, create lists, email them to yourselves and others and more.  For those Black Friday fanatics, this is a must have.  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tgi-black-friday/id335329737?mt=8

A Perfect Gift Helps Make a Perfect Christmas

#2. A Perfect Gift App- Needing gift ideas?  Wandering the mall aimlessly looking from one sale rack to the other and unable to find something that really fits the person you are looking for?  Give this app a shot.  You can search by budget, relationship and main interests of the person you are wanting the perfect gift for.  http://www.theiphoneappreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/aperfectgift.jpg

#3. Gift Planner App- This will help you keep track of your budget, the list of people you want to shop for, track what you have already gotten and what you are planning to get.  http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewGenre?id=36&mt=8

#4. Consumer Reports App- Should need no explanation.  Make sure what you’re buying will last past January 15th.  Consumer Reports doesn’t seem to be very proud of their app as I couldn’t find the link to it so just search for it in the app store via iTunes.

#5. Nearby Now- Find the gift you want listed at local stores and ensure they have it in stock before you leave the house. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=334096900&mt=8

#6. RedLaser- This is the coolest app of all!  Let’s say you see the PERFECT gift at your favorite retailer.  It’s something that you want to buy but you hate that feeling when you walk two doors down and see the same thing at half the price of what you spent.  Avoid feeling like a co mplete shopping idiot with this app.  It turns your camera into a barcode scanner, sends the item out to the web and shows you the stores it is available at and what the other retailers have it priced at.  NO WAY!!! But yes, it’s true.  http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=312720263&mt=8&s=143441

#7 Where’s My Car:  After spending 5 hours in a mall fighting the crowd, listening to the same Christmas music over and over and being blinded by the tinsel, your load is heavy with all the bags containing the great deals and perfet gifts you were able to find with the asisstance of your iPhone.  But now, how the hell do I get back to my car?  I don’t even remember what entrance I parked in front of.  Was it Macy’s or Dillards?  As it turns out, this app launches and you were parked in front of the movie theatre.  Oh well.  Thank God for the iPhone!  This app pinpoints your car to the greasy oil spot it is parked over.  Launch the app when you first park and on the way out, launch it again and it will give you directions and everything.  This is my kind of app!! (Now where did I put my wallet?)  http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=335295621&mt=8

Toy or Tool?

November 19, 2009

Verizon ads are poking fun at the iPhone saying it is a misfit toy for being on the AT&T Network.  (Whole different post there.)  I know my three year old loves my iPhone and it’s so easy to use, he doesn’t need help getting around, launching apps and playing games.  However, comparing the iPhone to a toy is well, silly.

Being that there are over 100,000 apps in the App Store for the iPhone, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some of these are heavy duty serious tools.  There are workhorse names like Cisco, SalesForce Manager, and Oracle that make up this list.  Delve in.  I hope it is useful to you!
