AT&T EXPANDS MOBILE BROADBAND COVERAGE IN SCOTTSDALE

57 New Cell Sites Activated as Part of Ongoing AT&T Investment in Local Wireless Network

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., February 22, 2010 — As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced mobile devices and applications, AT&T* today announced the activation of 57 new 3G cell sites in Scottsdale that are enhancing coverage for area residents and businesses. With 3G speeds, AT&T customers can surf the Web, download files faster, and enjoy the very latest interactive mobile applications.

The new cell sites are one part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive innovation and extend its 3G wireless network—the fastest in the nation, according to independent testing. It is also part of AT&T’s ongoing investment to build the broadband networks that will fuel economic growth and create jobs, and enable its customers to quickly access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.

“We’re always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage and invest in the local wireless network and Scottsdale residents benefit from policies that encourage infrastructure investment,” said Jerry Fuentes, president of AT&T Arizona-New Mexico. “We’re committed to providing the best possible experience and unprecedented choice and flexibility in devices, applications and service plans so that our customers have access to the people, information and entertainment they care about.”

The majority of the sites, 56 in total, that are enhancing Scottsdale’s coverage work as part of a comprehensive system specifically designed to address the terrain challenges in the area. The improved coverage is focused between N. Scottsdale Road to the west, along E. Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and extending to N. 124th Street to the east, E. Bell Road to the north, E. Shea Boulevard to the southwest, and beyond Via Linda to the southeast, including along the northern Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community border.

AT&T also activated a 3G cell site at the Scottsdale Stadium, home for the San Francisco Giants’ Spring Training, enhancing coverage for fans, area residents and businesses. The improved coverage is focused at the stadium and between N. 68th Street to the west, N. Hayden Road to the east, E. Camelback Road to the north, and E. Thomas Road to the south.

AT&T also recently completed a software upgrade at 3G cell sites nationwide that prepares the nation’s fastest 3G network for even faster speeds. The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T’s network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with and enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and well into the future. Faster 3G speeds are scheduled to become available in 2010 and 2011 on a market by market basis as AT&T combines the new technology with our second initiative to dramatically increase the number of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, primarily with fiber-optic connections, adding capacity from cell sites to the AT&T backbone network.

“One of my goals is to make certain that Scottsdale remains an attractive place for companies to invest in new technology that offers business and consumers more choice and more services. It improves our everyday lives and helps economic development efforts,” said Mayor Jim Lane.

AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T offers 3G data roaming in more than 115 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 220 countries.

Social Networking for Small Businesses

January 7, 2010

Social Networking for Small Business It’s 2010 and technology has not advanced to flying cars yet but the way consumers use information to choose who they do business with certainly has changed. As a small business, you are one of the main beneficiaries of these trends.

How To Get Started with Twitter: Twitter is important and useful to keeping your company on the edge of everyone’s mind.

1- Choose your brand, area of focus, personality and incorporate external resources and relevant information to “Joe Anybody”. Take some time to think about who you are, what is important to your company, the role you play, etc. If you are passionate about something in particular, focus on that.

2- Create an account and profile at twitter.com.

3- Update your settings.

4- Search for associates/friends/etc under “find people”

5- Add Mashable to your friends list and get their list of things to do for new Twitter accounts.
6- Use external links as often as possible. Use bit.ly in your browser to shorten links and make them fit.

7- Try to tweet at least once a day. Don’t tweet “I hurt my thumb.” Tweet consumer information or local information that is important.

8- Explore and build your network as you gain new customers and meet new people. Use twellow.com to find people by industry or location.

9- Get the word out- Link your user name to your email signature, business cards, blog and website.

Win New Business by word of mouth. People are more likely to use the web to find a business than the Yellow Pages. There are websites with customer feedback that help people choose the right and best company for their particular need. Build a web presence with Kudzu, DexKnows, etc. These sites allow the business to tell a bit about themselves. Ask your best customers to take a minute at these sites and let the world know how great you are! Use these sites for external customer testimonials when winning new business.

Be at a Customer’s Fingertips everywhere they go. There’s no denying that “apps” are making money. Some companies are using them to make millions of dollars. On the latest gadgets such as the iPhone, Blackberry and Google/Android phones, customers can easily access specific information about the San Diego Zoo, their bank accounts, weight loss, cooking, grammar, etc. Depending on your industry, customers are able to use this platform to get prices, current promotions, place orders, daily tips or upload pertinent information. If you think this may be a good fit, contact us and we will put you in touch with someone who writes these types of programs for companies.

Upcoming Social Media Training: If you think learning in person would be helpful to your business, there is a Social Media Event Seminar on January 14th &15th in Mesa. Presented by Greater Phoenix SCORE & The Arizona Department of Education Call 602-745-7250 or email Info@scorephoenix.org

LinkedIn: This tool is about business networking and finding the best employees. You can build a detailed profile, keep in touch with your business network and get testimonials at linkedin.com.

Facebook: I am personally a fan of my local sub shop, shoe store and a non-profit organization. You can build a business page that allows all Facebook users to come and check you out. The fans (most likely customers) can post comments about their experience with your company, share the company profile with their friends and basically reach thousands of people with no cost involved. Update regularly with fun photos, promotions, etc. As with Twitter, determine a focus and market a uniform message. Sign up at facebook.com.

Blogs: This is a great niche for people who like to write and share articles. It is an informative venue that you can link back to your twitter page, website, business cards, email address. Customers can subscribe to your blog and get your musings daily. As with Twitter and Facebook, determine a focus for your blog and plan out your articles. Free blogging sites can be created at wordpress.com or blogspot.com.

Bottom Line: Pick one or two things from these possibilities and give them a try. Some require more thought and planning than others but they are a great way to really promote your business at low or no cost. Get started and if you start up at Twitter, find me @ambermobile.com

Surviving Christmas Shopping with the iPhone

November 23, 2009

I love Christmastime.  I enjoy picking out presents for my friends and family.  I love the hustle and bustle, the bows and packages.  I even tolerate the music.

I figured even my iPhone can get into the Spirit and help me out with my shopping this year.  So I did a little research and came up with the best iPhone apps to help me with my holiday shopping which I now share with you. ( Be sure to see #6. It has major wow factor!)

#1. TGI Black Friday App- This app has all the Black Friday deals loaded.  You can view all of them on your iPhone, create lists, email them to yourselves and others and more.  For those Black Friday fanatics, this is a must have.  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tgi-black-friday/id335329737?mt=8

A Perfect Gift Helps Make a Perfect Christmas

#2. A Perfect Gift App- Needing gift ideas?  Wandering the mall aimlessly looking from one sale rack to the other and unable to find something that really fits the person you are looking for?  Give this app a shot.  You can search by budget, relationship and main interests of the person you are wanting the perfect gift for.  http://www.theiphoneappreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/aperfectgift.jpg

#3. Gift Planner App- This will help you keep track of your budget, the list of people you want to shop for, track what you have already gotten and what you are planning to get.  http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewGenre?id=36&mt=8

#4. Consumer Reports App- Should need no explanation.  Make sure what you’re buying will last past January 15th.  Consumer Reports doesn’t seem to be very proud of their app as I couldn’t find the link to it so just search for it in the app store via iTunes.

#5. Nearby Now- Find the gift you want listed at local stores and ensure they have it in stock before you leave the house. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=334096900&mt=8

#6. RedLaser- This is the coolest app of all!  Let’s say you see the PERFECT gift at your favorite retailer.  It’s something that you want to buy but you hate that feeling when you walk two doors down and see the same thing at half the price of what you spent.  Avoid feeling like a co mplete shopping idiot with this app.  It turns your camera into a barcode scanner, sends the item out to the web and shows you the stores it is available at and what the other retailers have it priced at.  NO WAY!!! But yes, it’s true.  http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=312720263&mt=8&s=143441

#7 Where’s My Car:  After spending 5 hours in a mall fighting the crowd, listening to the same Christmas music over and over and being blinded by the tinsel, your load is heavy with all the bags containing the great deals and perfet gifts you were able to find with the asisstance of your iPhone.  But now, how the hell do I get back to my car?  I don’t even remember what entrance I parked in front of.  Was it Macy’s or Dillards?  As it turns out, this app launches and you were parked in front of the movie theatre.  Oh well.  Thank God for the iPhone!  This app pinpoints your car to the greasy oil spot it is parked over.  Launch the app when you first park and on the way out, launch it again and it will give you directions and everything.  This is my kind of app!! (Now where did I put my wallet?)  http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=335295621&mt=8

Toy or Tool?

November 19, 2009

Verizon ads are poking fun at the iPhone saying it is a misfit toy for being on the AT&T Network.  (Whole different post there.)  I know my three year old loves my iPhone and it’s so easy to use, he doesn’t need help getting around, launching apps and playing games.  However, comparing the iPhone to a toy is well, silly.

Being that there are over 100,000 apps in the App Store for the iPhone, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some of these are heavy duty serious tools.  There are workhorse names like Cisco, SalesForce Manager, and Oracle that make up this list.  Delve in.  I hope it is useful to you!
